Bruxism
Bruxism is; the involuntary or habitual grinding of the teeth, typically during sleep.This is an abnormal situation and most of the time a disturbing voice can be heart by family members. Bruxism is considered to be a genetic disorder and the prevalance is 2 out of every 5 people in the community. 5 – 10 percent of people with bruxism get their teeth or restorations broken or damaged as a result of abnormal grinding, some of them complain about temporomandibular joint disorders and headaches or facial pain without a particular reason. Bruxism may have many etiological factors physical and psychological. The highest priority among them is stress. During stressfull periods bruxism is also exacerbated by stress. Sometimes dental malocclusion may also cause bruxism.We ask you a few questions to determine whether you have bruxism or not:
- Did any family member tell you that you were grinding during your sleep?
- Do you feel any pain in your neck and shoulders?
- Do you hear a “click” sound while the opening and closing movements of the jaw?
- Do you feel pain or fatigue in your ears, jaw joint or facial muscles when you wake up in the morning?
